What inspired you to become a musician?
It’s my joy, my play, my meditation and my therapy. Also in my household there was a policy: you had to learn an instrument (of your choice) for a year. I was 5 years old and I chose flute but honestly I was thinking recorder….
Who is your favourite/inspiring artist and why?
The architect Gaudi for his brilliance and appreciation of nature, Salvador Dali for embracing strange and Stevie Wonder for the groove
Who is your go-to artist or what is your go-to playlist on spotify?
FKJ (nu jazz) and Vulfpeck (funk) are always great but I get hooked on songs more than artists – my latest favourite is ‘The Coffee Cola Song’ by Francis Bebey. I love Aussie hip-hop playlists too.
First concert that made the biggest impression?
I remember being absolutely blown away at the age of about 6 by the local high school band 🙂
Most amazing gig moment you’ve had?
…So many! I played with Bliss (from Bliss’n’Eso) at a party once. Having fantastic jams while traveling in foreign countries. Having everyone sing ‘You Are My Sunshine’ along with me in nursing homes. Playing with lots of little kids absolutely going for it on percussion. And I absolutely love making up songs at gigs with the audience contributing and jamming.
Most embarrassing gig moment you’ve had?
My skirt fell down in the middle of a song at a gig once! I was wearing a dress over the top and managed to sort of shimmy it up quickly but it definitely wasn’t the plan.
What are you working on at the moment?
The craft of songwriting – I try to write something every day. In practise, Effortless Mastery (Kenny Werner) – taking time to play in a beautiful, relaxed way.
What is the career milestone you have reached so far that got you really excited?
I feel incredibly lucky just to be a professional musician! Everything else has been icing on the cake – playing at festivals, living off music, playing over 100 gigs a year, receiving my first royalties (I think it was $36!), playing on the radio.
What other milestones are you aiming to reach?
Make an album and travel the world jamming with people!
