5 Minutes with Hayden Johns

What inspired you to become a musician?

For as long as I can remember, I have always been drawn to music. Whether it was from listening to my parents/sibling’s music in the house, or seeing my friends learning to play musical instruments, music has been a major part of my life. At 9 years old, when I started to learn the drums, guitar and singing, I began to have aspirations to become a professional musician. The artist’s I was listening to and the dream of being on stage in front of an audience would inspire me.

Who is your favourite/inspiring artist and why?

I have so many. But if I had to choose one, it would be U2. I really appreciate the emotion they pour into their songs. It’s Bono’s lyrics and The Edge’s guitar orchestrations. Love it!

Who is your go-to artist or what is your go-to playlist on spotify?

At the moment I enjoy listing to John Mayer’s album “Room for Squares”. Really love his guitar work, vocal style and melodic approach.

First concert that made the biggest impression?

Metallica 1998, at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre. I remember they were fined for being too loud…. It was deafening!

Most amazing gig moment you’ve had?

Supporting Little Birdy on their Australian tour with our band Polymorphia. Fantastic time.

Most embarrassing gig moment you’ve had?

Rocking up to a gig and finding out our drummer has forgotten all his cymbals. We had to play every song with the drums only using the kick, snare and toms. It was a long night LOL, but the audience didn’t notice and were dancing all night.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently extending my song list for gigs and hopefully soon, get some time to write some original music again.

What is the career milestone you have reached so far that got you really excited?

Completing a Bachelor of Music and receiving a university medal for my studies.

What other milestones are you aiming to reach?

I’m aiming to start writing original music again and release my first solo album.
