SXSW Sydney Summed Up

Last week we attended SXSW Sydney, a large scale conference and festival dedicated to helping creative people achieve their goals across the Music, Tech & Innovation, Screen and Gaming industries. Here’s some of the key takings from just a couple of the conference sessions regarding the current music scene in Australia:

Session: New Trends In Artist Marketing

Key Trends:

Offline Engagement Still Relevant

  • Despite the dominance of digital marketing, traditional offline mechanics such as fan meet-and-greets, signings, and face-to-face interaction remain impactful and play a critical role in building loyal fanbases.

Digital Tools as a Gateway to Offline Community

  • Digital tools should be seen as a way to nurture real-world engagement. Platforms like social media, email marketing, and direct communication channels (Discord, text marketing) can effectively bridge the gap between online interaction and in-person community-building.

“Old School” Marketing Fundamentals:

  • Live performances and personalised marketing campaigns tailored to an artist’s strengths were highlighted as evergreen strategies. These classic approaches to fan engagement and artist promotion are not going away any time soon.

Storytelling as the Purest Form of Marketing:

  • Effective artist marketing is rooted in compelling storytelling. Brands and artists need to focus on telling authentic stories that resonate with audiences on a deeper level.

Short Form Content:

  • The increasing importance of short-form content, such as TikToks and Instagram reels, was noted, but it should be used strategically within a broader campaign that includes deeper fan engagement.

Artificial Intelligence:

  • The panel addressed AI’s role in marketing. Transparency and authenticity are key—artists and marketers should be forthright about AI’s involvement in content creation.

Incentivising Engagement:

  • Offering limited-edition items or experiences (e.g., exclusive vinyl) can incentivise fans to engage with new platforms or campaigns, providing them with a reason to subscribe or follow.

Session: The Next Gen of Music Lovers – Navigating Opportunities in a Changing Landscape

Key Observations:

Shift from Single-Day to Multi-Day Events:

  • Attendees are showing less interest in single-day events, favoring multi-day festivals where a culture and deeper sense of community can develop. This creates a unique opportunity for event organisers to structure immersive experiences that span several days.

Bar Sales Decline:

  • A current trend discussed is the noticeable decline in bar sales at events. Understanding why this drop is happening and adapting to it is important for sustaining revenue streams during live events.

These insights offer valuable lessons for EAO Entertainment as we consider new approaches to artist representation and event planning, particularly in how to effectively market artists and our services and adapt to shifting audience preferences.
